Q: I have a lot of fine lines around my eyes. Are there other options besides Botox? Andrea, North Webster
A. Andrea, many of those fine lines or “crow’s feet” are caused by your expressions over time – whether squinting, smiling or laughing. Sun damage can also break down the collagen around your eyes creating crepey skin and wrinkles. While a wrinkle relaxer like Botox® or Dysport® is typically the first treatment option, it sounds like you have tried that route and are looking for the next step. Wrinkle relaxers like these also do not address skin texture concerns.
While Botox is a wonderful treatment option for many patients to soften or eliminate those pesky fine lines around the eyes for about three months or so, for some patients with more severe lines or looking for a more permanent solution a laser treatment known as Pearl Fractional is a fantastic procedure. This also means no needles or surgery!
The Pearl Fractional laser works by using heat to create tiny columns deep in your skin. The process removes damaged tissue and then stimulates the growth of healthy, new skin, full of fresh collagen. This plumps the skin from below, eliminating wrinkles and brown spots creating more volume and repairing sun damage and other imperfections. Pearl Fractional can be used just around the eyes, lines above the lips or the entire face for complete resurfacing. With minimal downtime, many patients start to see improvement in their skin after one week, but will continue to see results for up to six months following their treatment as new collagen continues to grow and plump the skin. It is a very safe treatment as well, Andrea. Pearl Fractional is the most up-to-date FDA-approved laser resurfacing procedure available. It replaces the old CO2 laser resurfacing treatments, which had weeks of downtime and required anesthesia. It is wise to keep up your Botox treatments after having Pearl Fractional to protect your investment. Once the area is treated with Pearl Fractional and the lines are smoothed away, you don’t want to recreate those lines.
If you are not ready for Pearl Fractional, Andrea, there are several new dermal fillers available designed specifically to treat fine lines around the eyes and lips. The effects last about six to nine months. They work well in conjunction with Botox or Dysport.
Andrea, the best place to start is with a consultation with an experienced medical aesthetics provider. She can evaluate your skin and your concerns and give you the best treatment options for your needs.
