Q: I’ve been hearing about something for your face called ZO. What is this and it is just a trend? Teresa, Winona Lake
A. Teresa, thank you for writing in and asking about ZO. It is neither a trend or a fad or a new gadget for your face. ZO (pronounced Z.O. not ZO like go), which stands for Zein Obagi, is the newest, most technologically advanced medical skin care available today.
Let me give you a little bit of background information first, Teresa. Dr. Zein Obagi, a pioneer in the field of dermatology, created a line of prescription-based medical skin care products known as Obagi Nu-Derm ® in 1988. This innovative and highly effective skin care is based on Dr. Obagi’s research and philosophy of correction, stimulation and bleaching/blending. In 1997, Dr. Obagi sold his company to a group of investors and eventually all of his ties with that company diminished. Ten years later, he founded ZO Skin Health, Inc. According to Dr. Obagi, “I wanted to fulfill my dreams of focusing on skin health – to implement my ideas of 25 years ago and expand upon them with the knowledge and new principles of today.”
Last year, ZO® Medical was launched. It is still based on Dr. Obagi’s key principles of correction, stimulation and bleaching/blending. However, now equipped with 25 years of new science and technology, Dr. Obagi designed an updated version of his Nu-Derm system with the added benefits of “newly found principles of today, such as anti-inflammatory agents, DNA repair, barrier function enhancement and non-hydroquinone pigment control.” In layman’s terms this means it can treat wrinkles, brown spots, large pores, sun damage, skin laxity, acne, oily skin, age spots, redness and environmental damage. New healthy underlying skin cells emerge to the surface for a more even tone, smoother texture and restoration of a radiant appearance.
Keep in mind, Teresa, that medical grade skin care products are only available through a physician’s office, such as a dermatologist, plastic surgeon or medical spa. These products are stronger, more effective, cost less, consistently produce results and are backed by clinical research when compared to over-the-counter products. This line is now considered the most state-of the art, strongest medical skin care line available in the United States.
It is easy to become overwhelmed and confused with all the different skin care products available today which all promise younger and better looking skin. Teresa, much in the same way that Michael Jordan is synonymous with basketball, so is Dr. Obagi with skin care and skin health. His philosophy of skin care is not about a quick fix or overnight miracle, but rather treating the skin as a whole. If you have any further questions about ZO or the best medical skin care plan for your skin, do not hesitate to talk with a medical aesthetics professional.
